Da Nang pays attention to biodiversity conservation

The Da Nang Union of Science and Technology Associations and the GreenViet Biodiversity Conservation Centre (Green Viet) in collaboration with the Faculty of Biology, Agriculture and Environment of the University of Education and Science – the University of Da Nang organised a forum on biodiversity conservation on Saturday.

Speaking at the event, Permanent Vice President of the municipal Union of Science and Technology Associations Nguyen Dinh Phuc informed that biodiversity conservation in Da Nang and Viet Nam as a whole required attention, cooperation and exchange among relevant parties. He, therefore, emphasised the significance of educating all classes of people and tourists about biodiversity conservation, raising their awareness and helping them act correctly in their daily activities and ecotourism.

After merging with Quang Nam Province, new Da Nang will have a very diverse forest and marine ecosystem, including special-use forests of Son Tra, Ba Na – Nui Chua, Nam Hai Van, Song Thanh National Park, elephant conservation area and the headwater forests of Tay Giang, Dong Giang, Nam Giang, and Cu Lao Cham biosphere reserve. The city also has many endemic and rare species such as saola also known as the Vũ Quang ox, spindlehorn, or Asian bicorn; red-shanked and brown-shanked douc langurs; tigers; yellow-cheeked gibbons; and elephants.

Mr. Phuc also stressed the necessity for the city to increase the application of science and technology; and promote propaganda and education activities; to effectively carry out biodiversity conservation.

According to Mr. Pham Tai Minh, Director of Huong Sang Environment and Biological Resources Company Limited, under the city’s biodiversity conservation planning, the Ba Na – Nui Chua Nature Reserve will be upgraded into a national park, whilst a World Biosphere Reserve will be established in Da Nang. Also, there will be two wetland landscape protection areas at the Hoa Trung and Dong Nghe lakes, a medicinal garden, a botanical garden, and an animal rescue centre.

In addition to implementing priority projects for each stage according to the planning, the city needed to continue to have harmonious management mechanisms between socio-economic development and biodiversity conservation, he noted.
