100% of residential groups in Da Nang to implement solid waste classification at source by 2025

The Da Nang People’s Committee has issued a plan outlining the city’s roadmap for implementing the classification of household solid waste at source throughout 2025.

Specifically, the plan sets a target for 100% of residential groups to carry out the separation of household solid waste at source and for 100% of households to effectively sort their domestic waste within their neighborhoods.

Additionally, over 70% of establishments in industrial and high-tech zones are expected to implement source-based classification of domestic waste in accordance with citywide standards.

More than 90% of production, business, service, and tourism establishments are required to carry out waste separation at source under the city’s standardised method. The plan also mandates 100% implementation in schools and healthcare facilities. Furthermore, over 80% of traditional markets, supermarkets, and shopping centres must be provided with communication, guidance, and support to implement waste separation at source.

Each ward and commune is tasked with developing detailed plans and piloting waste separation and collection models for food waste. These models must align with the city’s general framework for organizing waste separation at source and be accompanied by accurate, periodic reporting on implementation results, categorized by waste type.

Based on the nature and origin of waste generation, available infrastructure and technology, and results from previous implementation efforts since 2020, the city has classified household solid waste into the following categories:

Recyclable waste: discarded paper, plastic, metal, and other recyclable or reusable materials.

Food waste: kitchen scraps both pre- and post-preparation such as leftovers, expired food, used cooking oil, etc.

Other domestic waste: hazardous household waste (e.g., broken fluorescent bulbs, used batteries and accumulators, containers for chemicals), bulky waste (e.g., furniture, mattresses, large tree branches), and waste generated from home renovation or demolition activities.

Residual domestic waste: any other types of household waste not falling into the abovementioned categories.

The plan will be rolled out citywide for recyclable waste (paper, plastic, metal), hazardous domestic waste, and residual waste. It will apply to government agencies, research institutes, schools, industrial facilities inside and outside industrial zones, service and tourism businesses, hospitals and healthcare providers, supermarkets, shopping centres, traditional markets, households, and individuals involved in the generation of household solid waste across Da Nang.
