Da Nang is the only city in Viet Nam to be recognised as one of the world’s 20 low-carbon cities. This was announced at the 44th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Meeting on Energy in Washington DC, USA.

The city is expected to receive a grant worth 600,000 USD from the World Bank to carry out its environmental improvement research and assessment projects.

Over the 2016 – 2020 period, Da Nang will strive to meet the criteria for becoming an environmentally-friendly city. These include treating 100% of industrial and domestic waste water, recycling 70% of solid waste, and utilising 25% of reclaimed water. The city will do its utmost to reach the target of becoming an environmentally-friendly city by 2020.

In June of this year, Da Nang presented to APEC 4 proposals to reduce its carbon emissions. These were the use of electric bicycles, the construction of rapid transit bus and metro systems, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and the use of new energy.

At a conference on green economic development held in Da Nang in September, the Da Nang Department of Natural Resources and Environment reported that the city had reduced carbon emissions by 12,000 tonnes through its energy efficiency projects.
