Waste classification at source
After Tet holiday 2025, on February 5, households of Binh Phuoc No.1 residential area in Thuan Phuoc Ward, Hai Chau District, collected a combined total of 95.5 kilos of paper, 18 kilos of aluminum cans, and 32.5 kilos of various types of plastic. The abovementioned amount of recyclable waste was collected on-site by the Da Nang Urban Environment JSC with a total amount of VND 1.15 million.
Nearly 100% of households in this residential area has sorted waste at source, so the amount of recycled waste collected every week is quite large.
Mr. Pham Cong Luong, a representative of Binh Phuoc 1 residential area, said that in 2024, the residential area collected more than VND 40 million from selling recycled waste and allocated more than VND 33.6 million to support local social welfare and environmental sanitation activities.
Also after Tet, women’s associations at all levels in Son Tra District conducted environmental cleanup and collected recycled waste after sorting waste at households and businesses.
Chairwoman of the Son Tra District Women’s Union Thai Thi Phuong Lan said that in January 2025, women’s unions maintained general cleaning activities on roads and in residential areas; classified waste at source; and sold recyclable waste at a total of more than VND 29 million.
In addition, the women’s unions collected about 31 kg of used batteries to be treated separately according to regulations for hazardous waste.
In 2025, women’s unions at all levels in Son Tra District will continue to carry out environmental protection activities, contributing to improving the quality of the natural environment in the district and building Da Nang into an environmentally-friendly city.
Among the 31 criteria of the Project “Building Da Nang – Environmental City” in the 2021-2030 period, Da Nang sets a target of 90% of households classifying waste at source by 2025.
According to the Bureau of Sea, Islands and Environment under the Da Nang Department of Natural Resources and Environment, in recent years, government agencies, units, localities, associations and unions citywide have actively implemented the aforementioned goal. According to statistics, all wards and communes in the city have carried out waste classification and 97.38% of households have been propagandized, instructed and classified waste at source.
16 criteria in 2025 achieved
Vice Head of the Bureau of Sea, Islands and Environment of Da Nang Vo Thanh said that every year the municipal People’s Committee issues a plan to implement more than 70 tasks of the aforementioned project.
Da Nang has topped the country in the application of a set of Environmental Protection Indicators (PEPI) which was issued by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) for 3 consecutive years.
The city was honoured with “Smart, green, clean environmental management city” title by the Viet Nam Software and Information Technology Services Association (VINASA) in 2021, 2023 and 2024.
From 2021-2024, the implementation of the project has achieved many results with 16 criteria (out of 31 criteria) achieving the set goals by 2025. In particular, the city’s air quality index (AQI) is below the threshold of 100; 100% of the population is provided with clean water through the centralised water supply system; 100% of the rural population has access to hygienic water sources; 89.9% of the total urban domestic wastewater is treated; 100% of industrial parks, industrial clusters and Da Nang High-Tech Park have centralised wastewater treatment systems that meet environmental technical standards; and 100% of hazardous waste is collected and treated according to legal regulations on the total volume of hazardous waste generated.
In the city, there have been many movements, models and activities to protect the environment such as environmental sanitation campaigns, waste classification at source, and planting and caring for trees, with the active participation of the community and people, thereby initially creating a rapid spread and achieving certain effectiveness. Conserving nature and forest biodiversity in the city is carried out very closely and synchronously.
To continue effectively implementing the Project “Building Da Nang – Environmental City” in the 2021-2030 period, the Bureau of Sea, Islands and Environment of Da Nang has proposed that the city organize a preliminary assessment of the implementation of the project over the past five year in 2025.
Efforts should be made to resolving key environmental issues, conserving nature and biodiversity, promoting environmental protection in resource exploitation and use, and raising awareness of environmental protection towards developing a circular economy, and an ecological city.
